How to prepare for field hockey tryouts?

in

All my life I have been playing ice hockey but this year I want to tryout for field hockey. I'm going into the 7th grade. Can you give me any tips? Thanks:)<3
Okay I forgot to metion that I am still going to be playing hockey.

Answer:
Some positions are more running then otheres (the backs and goaly, defence do very few running but must run at practice). Also you should practice hitting in grass because it doesnt go as far when hit soft/medium as on ice, it needs power.

How to prevent my visor from fogging up?

in

I have a game tonight, and last time, my brand new fishbowl-style visor fogged up pretty bad. I just read on the internet that applying shaving cream helps to prevent this from happening. Can anyone confirm this? If so, do I apply it on the outside or inside of the visor? How long before game time? Thanks.

Answer:
I wear an oakley halfshield and have a spray that I bought from a local hockey shop that works great. However, in a last minute pinch (which you seem to be in) wipe a thin layer of handsoap, shampoo, or dishsoap on your visor. Make sure your visor is dry, and that you are using a dry paper towel that won't smudge or leave particles behind. I've used handsoap and dishsoap quite a few times, and I usually apply it about an hour before I play. I have waited till the last minute before though and it still worked fine.

How to choose what position to play in ice hockey?

in

I would like to know what hockey positions are good for beginners and which take years to get good at.

Answer:
Why isn't anybody suggesting you play goal? Lot's of fun being the last line of defense. You get to play the full game and you can even be a bit weird.. Good luck.

How to find the best replacement wheels and bearings for my street hockey skates?

in

They're an old pair of "Street Attack" inlines with Brett Hull's endorsement. I've had them for 10yrs and now my outdoor skating (and T-stops) have worn everything to- well, they're worn. I have an idea of what wheels to buy, but have no idea what kind of bearings I would put in them. I'm only 100lbs and use them to travel the bumpy streets of Vermont.

Answer:
If you have the ones with a white plastic chassis, I am pretty sure they will likely only fit up to 72mm size wheels. I would get 80a hardness for durability / shock absorption. Hyper makes a pretty good rec skating wheel. They will be a lot better for you than a hockey profile wheel, the latter tends to be angled to withstands stops and starts eh. As for bearings, try ABEC-3 standard bearings. A higher rated bearing will spin faster, but on asphalt it won't make a big difference unless you're speed training. If online eh, you can try stores like hockeymonkey.com, inlinewarehouse.com or hockeygiant.com Also be sure to have an allen wrench, bearing pusher, and rotate wheels periodically. Bearing cleaner so you can remove them from wheels to remove grit and dirt wouldn't be a bad idea either.

How to motivate myself to root for the Rangers more intently?

in

I am a NY Rangers fan. They are in the NHL playoffs. However, I feel checking their scores and watching games would be exhausting, or even hearing about scores. I do not want the Rangers to be eliminated, but how can I motivate myself to root more intently?

Answer:
You consider your self a fan but you get exhausted for even checking the scores! You sound more like a Toronto fan.

How to convince my parents to get hockey billets?

in

Thy have said every year 'next year we will get a billet' im sick of hearing that. What can I say to convince them to? Thanx in advance !

Answer:
I am going to suggest Mom & Dad are probably wise to their daughter having ill intent and if they decide to ever entertain the idea of offering housing it will be once you are grown up and out of the house. Something tells me your motives arent "to help" ....am I correct? As a parent (and grandparent) I will suggest there is probably nothing you can say to convince them, they probably know you well enough to know better....maybe?

How difficult is it to learn how to play ice hockey as an adult?

in

I am 29 years old and soon to turn 30 and want to start learning how to play ice hockey. I never had ice hockey in my town growing up but always wanted to learn. However, I'm wondering how difficult it is to learn how to skate and some of the basic skills involved in order to play at the recreational level with no prior experience. I was quite athletic and played sports growing up such as basketball, football, baseball, and floor hockey, but have not played organized sports in about 8-10 years. Am I kidding myself trying to learn how to play ice hockey now at 30 years old??

Answer:
As a Hockey Father and long time player I can tell you there are many middle aged and older people learning hockey. There are several steps to take first - learn to skate. This can be done on roller blades or at the rink. See if your local rink has a learn to skate program and enroll. We see retirees learning at our facility. If not, see if during open ice you can skate while holding a chair in front of you - offers the chance to maintain your balance. If you choose the ice option, get fitted with a good pair of hockey skates, not rentals. There is no greater deterent to skating than trying to learn on ill-fitting skates and killing your feet. If you opt to learn roller blading, again get your own skates. Once you have the skating basics down, most ice rinks have a basics hockey program. We have one for adults at our facility that starts with the basics; skate stops, turning, skating backwards and then progresses through stick handling, shooting and advanced skills. Whatever method you choose, when you start wear a helmet, wrist, elbow and knee guards to protect yourself. We have in Chicago a well known financial king that learned to skate and play hockey when he turned 50 - Sam Zell. Also, most over 30 adult leagues are non-checking leagues to protect the players. Ask your rink about Rat Hockey nights as well.
